Automatic gate installation in Lancaster, CA
We connect Lancaster homeowners with a licensed gate contractor to automate a new or existing driveway gate: the opener, solar or hardwired power, keypads and remotes, and the safety sensors that stop a gate closing on a car.
A referral service. The licensed contractor gives the quote and does the work, and the quote is free.
- Gate weight
- Operator size
- Swing or slide
- Arm or rack drive
- Power
- Trench or solar
- Controls
- Keypad, intercom
The contractor prices it after seeing the gate and the distance from the house. A long trench for power is the local extra to watch.
What an automatic gate system includes
An automatic gate is four parts working together: something to move it, power to run it, a way to tell it to open, and devices that stop it when something is in the way. Ask for each one to be priced on its own line, because that is where two quotes for the same driveway tend to differ.
What moves the price of each part
IllustrationThe operator
The motor that moves the gate. Each hinge post of a swing gate gets its own arm or pad mounted operator; a slide gate takes one operator beside the opening. Size it for the weight and length of the leaf. Width alone doesn't tell you enough.
IllustrationPower
A circuit run out from the house, or a solar panel charging a battery at the gate. An opener can also carry a backup battery so the gate keeps working for a while in an outage.
IllustrationControls
Remotes for the household, a keypad on a post at the drive, and an intercom if you want to let visitors in from the house. Each is its own line on the quote, and a wired intercom can share the power trench.
IllustrationSafety devices
Photo eyes across the opening, contact edges on the leaf and loops cut into the driveway that sense a car. They stop or reverse the gate. The type and the number of devices depend on the gate and how wide the opening is.
Swing or slide operator
The operator has to match the gate, so the driveway makes this call. Both types have a weak spot in Lancaster wind and sand. A good installer plans around it before quoting.
Compare driveway gate styles
IllustrationSwing gate operator
An arm pushes each leaf open in an arc, which suits a hinged gate that already swings freely. In a gust a swinging leaf acts like a sail, and the operator has to hold it; NOAA records for Fox Field show 51 days with gusts of 40 mph or more in 2024. Ask for an operator rated for the full weight and length of each leaf, and a solid stop at the open position.
Needs room for: the full swing arc
IllustrationSlide gate operator
One operator rolls the gate sideways along the fence. Nothing swings into the wind or into the driveway, and a cantilever slider rides on rollers at the post, so blowing sand has no ground track to jam. It needs clear room along the fence and a concrete pad for the operator.
Needs room for: a run along the fenceWhich one comes out cheaper once installed depends on the lot, so where the driveway allows either, have the installer price both.
Solar or hardwired on a long Lancaster lot
Plenty of Lancaster homes sit well back from the street, with the gate at the far end of a long driveway. Getting power out to it can be the biggest local line on the quote.
IllustrationHardwired
A hardwired operator runs off a circuit from the house, carried to the gate in a trench. The trench is priced on its length and on what the digger meets, so a long rural driveway costs more to wire than a short suburban one. A new line voltage circuit falls under the state's C-10 electrical class, so ask whether the gate contractor holds it or brings in an electrician. Hardwiring suits a heavy gate, heavy daily use and an intercom that needs steady power.
Solar
A solar operator charges a battery from a panel at the gate, so there is no trench at all. It suits a lighter gate opened a handful of times a day, and the panel and battery are sized to that use. Keep the panel clear of dust, and swap the battery once it stops carrying the gate through the evening.
Safety standards and fire access
An automatic gate is a heavy machine that closes on its own, so both the operator and the gate have published standards. On some long driveways the fire code has a say as well.
Lancaster permits, height and fire access rulesThe operator
Gate operators are covered by UL 325, the safety standard for electric operators for doors, gates and similar openings. It also covers the external entrapment protection devices, the photo eyes and edges that keep a gate from closing on a person or a car. Ask for an operator listed to it.
The gate
The gate has its own standard. ASTM F2200 covers how automated vehicular gates are built, swing and slide included, and says an automated gate system must also be compliant with UL 325. An older manual gate may need changes before it can be automated, so have the installer check it against the standard first.
Fire access
Where a gate crosses a fire apparatus access road, California Fire Code section 503.6 requires the fire code official to approve it and calls for an approved means of emergency operation. The code wants that road to reach within 150 ft of a home's outside walls, so on a lot where the house sits far back, the driveway may be it. Ask the fire department before you build.
How an automatic gate goes in
It follows the same stages as any Lancaster gate installation, with the power and the controls added in the middle.
- 01
Check the gate and posts
An existing gate must be square, move freely and hang from posts that will not shift.
- 02
Bring in power
A solar panel and battery at the gate, or a trench and a circuit from the house.
- 03
Mount and connect
Operator on its post or pad, keypad at the drive, remotes paired to the receiver.
- 04
Test and hand over
Photo eyes and edges tested with you watching, and the manual release shown.
Who does the work
Automatic gates are licensed work in California. The CSLB D-28 classification names power activated gates, card activated equipment and other access control devices. Gates Lancaster CA does not install anything itself. We connect you with a licensed contractor, and you can look up their license with the CSLB before you sign.
What the written quote should list
The operator's make and model and the gate weight it is rated for, the power source, every control and safety device by type and count, any trenching or concrete, and who pulls any permit. With those on paper, two quotes can be compared line by line.
Upkeep after it goes in
Wipe the photo eye lenses and sweep the track after a windy spell, keep a solar panel clean, and test that the gate reverses when the beam is blocked. Keep the manual release key where you can reach it from outside the gate. If it starts acting up, the gate opener problems guide walks through the checks.
Automatic gate questions
What sets the cost of installing an automatic gate?
Four things: the gate itself, if it is new; an operator rated for its weight and length; the power, run underground from the house or gathered by a panel and battery at the gate; and the controls and safety devices. Automating a gate you already own skips the first. On a long Lancaster lot the power run is the part to price with care.
What decides the price of an electric gate opener?
The gate's weight and length, whether it swings or slides, and how many times a day it runs. A solar unit also needs a panel and battery big enough for that use. Light duty kits sold for home installs cost less, but they are built for light gates and are the wrong pick for a wide steel driveway gate.
What are the downsides of automatic gates?
They cost more than a manual gate and need upkeep: sensors to clean, a battery to replace when it tires and the odd repair to a sensor, a board or an arm. A power cut means using the manual release. In Lancaster, blowing sand and wind add wear to tracks, sensors and hinges.
Do I need a permit for an automatic gate in Lancaster?
Lancaster's Building and Safety division does not require a permit for residential fences under 7 ft, and city zoning caps height at 4 ft in a front yard setback. Power is a separate question, so ask the installer whether the opener circuit needs an electrical permit. If the driveway is a fire access road, California Fire Code section 503.6 requires the fire code official to approve the gate.
Is solar or hardwired better for a gate opener in Lancaster?
Solar avoids a trench, and the trench grows with every stretch of driveway between the house and the gate. Hardwired suits a heavy gate, many trips a day or an intercom. The installer can size a solar panel and battery to your gate's weight and use, or price the trench for a hardwired run. Get both and compare.
