Height and permits in Lancaster

The building permit and the height limit are two separate questions. Lancaster's Building and Safety division does not require a permit for residential fences under 7 ft. Zoning is another matter: Section 17.08.130 of the Lancaster Municipal Code sets 4 ft for a front setback or the street side setback of a corner lot, and 6 ft for side and rear setbacks, measured from finished grade.
A tall entry gate in a front yard fence is where the two collide, so check it with Lancaster Planning before you order it. The same section does not allow chain link or barbed wire for residential uses.
A pool gate follows state law. Health and Safety Code 115923 calls for a barrier at least 60 in high, a gate that opens away from the pool, and a latch that closes and locks on its own, set no lower than 60 in.
